Surprise Wedding
During a rooftop DJ set, my partner and I met a wonderful couple whose take on life is one of open minds and open hearts. After getting to know them through phone dates during the pandemic, we were lucky enough to be invited to a 50th birthday-slash-engagement party, which brought these two different cultures together; British and Māori hearts. So, it was a little surprising, when the engagement became a surprise wedding!
As with most surprises, activities happen in a flash. With an hour given to those who wished to put together a speech and/or say something to the happy couple, the pressure was on! However, I like a challenge, so I quickly created this poem for them!
This page is dedicated to James & Cheryl, AKA Jam & Cheese ♥

On a rooftop bar
Somewhere not far
Nightmares on wax
Was the name of the set
But let’s check the facts
That’s where we all met
But The DJ never showed up
We got a treat from another artiste
That never stopped us from raising a cup
Coz to Cheryl & James, the fun never ceased
Because Life is for laughing and having loads of fun
Meeting new people Come biblical rain or brilliant sun
Or helping a neighbour out
By climbing through a window
To save the person locked out
But to them, they are their kin, though
They make a complimentary pair!
Listen & look closely over there
With James all shy And Cheryl all bold
But Cheryl will cry And James will scold

Soft and hard,
Dark and light,
New or scarred
Black and white
Round and square
Covered and bare
Because we care
Each of us bring something To the world
A smooth straight line
Or a line super curled
Love is love
Our Ancestors above
Let’s raise a toast
So we can all share this boast
That we are blessed
That this party is the best!
To Cheryl and James
We’re all glad we came!
