Busy Bees
This poem was about the IT team I used to work within, & what’s important to all of us IT folks.
I’d been sat with a colleague during a birthday dinner and shared with her that I’d started writing poetry. Unbeknownst to me, she later mentioned this to our manager, who then requested I write a poem for our Monday morning meeting!
It took about 4 hours to complete. He was so chuffed when he heard me read it out for the team, that he asked for an audio recording to share with the rest of the company!
Naturally, I obliged, and didn’t regret it! I had so many comments about how soothing my voice was, and how well I had written the poem, I’m glad he asked to share my talent. In fact, this also was one of the events that encouraged me on my journey to creating this website. I’ll be forever grateful for their support and praise.

We resiliently have a predilection
For brilliantly changing direction
Imagine a section or selection of fields
Indexing data and reporting yields
Demanding defects, to challenge our intellects
We Terminate Tickets, to knock proverbial wickets,
Servers falling over, sending Pings and other things,
Performing CMDs to meet user demands,
“Clear the cache, give that a bash!”

Jesting whilst penetration testing
Volumes undeserving,
Sometimes Unnerving,
Yet we continue swerving…
the continued Incidents,
disguised as coincidence…
That become Probs, or synchronisation jobs…
Backups, Bounce backs and bugs
Furious typing between coffee chugs
To ensure the fonts and fancy formats
That please the clients of fat cats

With a peculiar and truly a
nuance in networking
Bugs lurking, there’s always something not working!
Those strange requests from stakeholders
Chosen change requests take hold of us
Made up stories of convincing tone
“He said he’d clicked on that whilst we were on the phone!”
We pick up on a pollen scent “Was that what they meant?”
Smoke testing and mirrored machines
The unsolved mystery of Flickering screens

But we love a challenge, being born detectives
Our clients unaware of how protective
We are of our security, our inner purity
Like busy bees building the hive
The resulting honey is: everything’s live!
Until they are satisfied, until every avenue is tried
And inside this seemingly invisible world; a cloud in a shroud, we can be proud
As resolutions and solutions
Precede technical revolutions
To users, hidden and mostly forbidden
The low level growth you must be kidding
Trees of code in our abode of balanced load
Like leaves, taking shape with configuration modes,

Building branches
Shielding advances
And in between, to keep us keen,
Our personal protocols include gifs and lols,
Never mind the business’ background hum
Our wings are beating a different drum
So any IT hating, slating and low rating
Is soon replaced by a pleasing interface
Then the business returns to its former place
In the [Enter business industry here] race
Settled and secure on their safety of VPNs
Then and only then, all is calm again;
A temporary wave of IT Zen
